General Information Situated in the centre of the geo-economic quadrilateral made up of Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and the Basque Country, Zaragoza occupies a privileged position – the gateway between Europe and the Iberian Peninsula – which has played an important part in communications and trading ever since the Romans, two thousand years ago, chose the Iberian settlement of Salduba to transform it into Cesaraugusta. Some 300 Km separate Zaragoza from Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia and Bilbao. The city’s privileged position makes for easy communication with Spain and the rest of the world, with a convenient airport equipped with the longest runway in Europe and with great potential for passenger and goods transport. Zaragoza is the hub of the motorway network of northern Spain, linking Catalonia and the Basque Country with the Levante and Castilla. In addition, Zaragoza is one of the rail network’s principal links, and this will be enhanced in the near future with the introduction of the High Speed Train and the conversion of El Portillo Station into a modern Multi-Transport Station
